  • Powerful and sleek, Constellations were up for a number of records: April 17th, 1944: piloted by TWA president Jack Frye and Howard Hughes, the flight from Burbank (California) to Washington D.C. took 6 hours and 57 minutes, averaging a speed of 330.9 mph (532.5 km per hour). While returning, the Constellation airplane stopped at Wright Field and gave to Orville Wright his very last plane flight. That was more than 40 years after his historic first flight on December 17th, 1903. Orville Wright said that the Constellation's wingspan was longer than his first flight's distance! - September 29th, 1957: a Constellation flew from Los Angeles to London in 18 hours and 32 minutes. This accomplishment still holds the record for the longest-duration non-stop passenger flight. - October 1-2, 1957: inaugural TWA's flight from London to San Francisco. The Constellation aircraft kept flying non-stop for 23 hours and 19 minutes.

  • The Lockheed Constellation (affectionately named Connie), was an airliner with four propeller engines built between 1943 and 1958 in Burbank, California. Distinctive with its triple-tail design and dolphin-shaped, graceful fuselage, it has been used as a civilian airliner and also as a U.S. military air transport airplane. It serviced in the Berlin Airlift and also as the presidential aircraft for U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. On February 6th, 1946, TWA (Trans World Airlines) opened the very first post-war commercial intercontinental air service with a New York-Paris flight in a Lockheed Constellation.
